How Katrina Kaif made it from Barnet to Bollywood

Flick through this month’s Indian edition of Vogue or any one of the country’s gossipy tabloids and you will see one face pictured again and again — that of Bollywood’s newest megastar: a 24-year-old from the London borough of Barnet.

The profile belongs to Katrina Kaif, who watched her first Bollywood film at the age of 16 on Channel 4. Rejected as a teenager by modelling agencies in London for not being skinny enough, she has the £1 billion-a-year Hindi cinema industry at her feet.

The trajectory of her career has been extraordinary even by Bollywood’s hyperbolic standards. She arrived in India aged 17, speaking not a word of Hindi or knowing how to dance — two prerequisites of Indian cinema. Today, with 15 films to her credit, she is India’s most searched-for celebrity, according to Google; the country’s sexiest woman, according to the lads’ magazines FHM and Maxim; and the sub-continent’s most bankable female lead, according to the past year’s box-office receipts.

Her A-list status was confirmed earlier this year when Mattel, the toymaker, said that a forthcoming Bollywood Barbie doll would be modelled on Miss Kaif — not bad for a former wannabe model who couldn’t get a break in waif-obsessed Britain.

Assured of being mobbed if she appears in public in India, she cherishes her relative anonymity in Britain and speaks fondly about being able to stroll down Finchley High Street unmolested during her frequent but secret visits to her childhood home. “My London childhood and my career are two very different things,” she said. “I don’t like people to make the connection. The little bits you’ll read on the internet here and there about my London roots, they are the limits of what I’m willing to divulge.”

What is known is that she is one of eight siblings — six sisters, one brother — born in Hong Kong to a British mother, a lawyer-turned- charity worker, and a now-estranged Kashmiri father. The family moved to Finchley via homes across the globe when Miss Kaif was 14.

After being brought up on a film diet of Casablanca, MGM classics and Charlton Heston epics — “my mum was strict; she wouldn’t allow us to see ‘bad’ movies,” — the exuberance of Bollywood resonated instantly.

Miss Kaif’s fair skin, classical features and hourglass figure proved an instant hit in India, even if her halting Hindi was initially jibed at. Industry watchers say that her success has been based on her work ethic as much as her looks. She has five films in various states of production at the moment.

Miss Kaif is about to take the biggest gamble of her career. Her next film, New York, is set in the United States and based on the 9/11 terror attacks. Part of a new wave of Bollywood films that are dispensing with traditional Hindi formulas, it risks bemusing her fan base, which is used to seeing her miming and dancing.

New York is going to be a complete departure,” Miss Kaif said. “No lip synching. No dancing. Whether it’s going to be a good surprise or a bad surprise — I like to leave those things in the hands of God, and destiny and the audience.”

Katrina to auction her clothes, personal belongings

Here is good news for Katrina Kaif die-hard fans. You can own her clothes and accessories, as she is planning to auction them to support her mother Susanna’s orphanage, Mercy Home in Chennai.

Buzz up!
Yes you heard it right. Katrina confirmed that she is going help her mother to raise Rs.50 lakhs. For this, she is going to auction some of her film costumes, accessories and her personal belongings to help her mother set up a prenatal care centre.

Katrina said that the idea behind the auctioning of her belongings is to create awareness and motivate the public to come forward and help the cause. Mercy Home is very close to Katrina's heart, and hence she is doing all she could to bring about awareness.

It may be mentioned that Katrina's mother Susanna also fights against female foeticide through Hope Reach, a social organisation.

Katrina is now Skin Conscious !!!!

The beautiful Katrina Kaif has decided to not done any make-up from now on. The actress has become skin conscious and will try to shun glorified facial paints in order to save her skin from serious damage.

Katrina Kaif’s ethereal beauty has a lot to do with her flawless skin and the lady has developed a fear that if she continues being exposed to the routine make-up and strong arch lights, soon she would lose her skin’s natural sheen. So she will use minimal make-up during the shoots from now onwards.

The lady, while talking to a tabloid, expressed this opinion, which is not irrelevant for the actresses who work round the clock in layers of make-up under the dazzling and hot arch lights. Katrina is of the opinion that it’s very unnatural to put heavy make-up as it dulls the radiance of your face and is harmful for the health of the skin in the long run.

Quite expectedly, Kats hates sitting for hours for make-up sessions during the shoots. And she would in future avoid such sittings unless absolutely necessary.

A few days back, Aishwarya Rai was in news because she sneakily applied make-up while her director Mani Ratnam wanted her to look plain while shooting Ravana .

Not to forget that there are many actresses who have gone Plain Jane in films. Priyanka Chopra shot sans make-up for a considerable part of her role in Fashion and she is again without greasepaints in Kaminey . Katrina herself is sporting minimal make-up in Prakash Jha ’s political drama Rajniti .

SMS NYASAR

Maaf jika saya kasar, saya hanya berusaha jujur sampeyan.

Bagaimana Kau tahu?”
Aku tertawa geli melihat keheranan Pejalan Jauh.
Cerita kembali berputar, mengetengahkan kisah sang pejalan jauh, sang tokoh utama.
“ Kenapa Kau pertontonkan aku soal makanan?
Ah! Benar-benar hari yang menyebalkan.”
“ Apa kamu tahu apa maksudku?”
Ia menggeleng.
Gambar kembali berputar. Nampak sebuah pesawat meledak, membuat 120-an orang kehilangan nyawa dalam sekejap.
Malah keseret pekerjaan, nggak pernah punya waktu luang.”
“ Bahkan lupa padaku juga, kan? Paling kalau ingatpun kalau kamu sedang butuh teman curhat, abis cerita panjang lebar lalu minggat.”
“ Iya, ya. Benar-benar aku ini mahkluk bejat!”
“ Wooh, kamu yang ngomong sendiri lo. Aku ndak ikutan.”
Ia tertawa, ada malu nampak di matanya.
“ Bahkan baca email-emailku saja kamu jarang. Palingan juga pas Ramadhan, itupun buyar kalo kesibukan menggodamu.”
“ He-eh. Aku memang jarang baca email-email-Mu. Saking lamanya tak menyentuhnya, sampai aku blekak-blekuk membacanya.”
“ Gimana nggak blekak-blekuk wong kamu ndak membiasakan membaca.
“ Hahaha, ingat kata pepatah jawa lamun ana bandha sira tentu ngreksa, lamun tambah akeh tambah ngrekasa artinya kalau ada harta tentu kamu mencarinya, tetapi semakin banyak kamu tambah sengsara. Gimana enggak kalau kamu jadi kepikiran, uh gimana nyimpan harga segitu banyaknya, disimpan di rumah takut kemalingan , disimpan di bank takut bank-nya kolaps. Dan masih banyak gimana lagi yang bikin pusing kepala, bukannya malah lega setelah kamu punya banyak harta segunung tingginya.”
“ Hehehe, tahu saja…”
Lho wong aku. CEO nomer satu. Ya jelas tau hal-hal semacam itu.
“ Lah terus gimana dengan Cah Ayu itu? Bukankah waktu kamu putus dengannya mulutmu maju persis kayak orang baru ngemut gardu? Masih juga marah-marah karena itu?”
“ Hiyaaa! Engkau membuatku malu saja, ah. Sudah tidak.”
“ Ck, gitu dulu uring-uringan melulu sampai-sampai malas menemui-Ku. Menganggap-Ku jahat dan tak adil karena menghalangimu. Ada sesuatu di balik itu, Kawanku. Hanya saja Aku ingin kau mengetahui jawabannya sendiri.”
“ Iya. Maaf aku suka negative thinking pada-Mu.”
“ Oke.”
“ Aku pamitan dulu.”
Hati-hati, Sob. Semoga Nur-Ku tersampai pada-Mu.
